Hi, we had a hard drive shut down and after the restore we get "Consult dealer to Purchase Lan Pack" message and then it drops off. Not sure what file(s) we are missing on this. Any thoughts?

ACCPAC Plus is picky, and when an original install is done many of the critical files are hidden files, most likely also including some of the LAN Pack files.

If you never "unhid" or showed the hidden files in your directory structure on the original drive, it's possible the backup software skipped them. They are crucial to the install.

I would think you would have to get the old drive working good enough to get the hidden files unhidden and copied over, or have the original floppies to re-install the LAN Packs.

A proper ACCPAC consultant will no doubt give you better advice and might be able to help you restore this.

Hi TheMick:
We are a 'proper' consulting firm specializing in ACCPAC Plus and Softrak Systems Adagio. Ed is right that your backup may have skipped critical hidden files like EZUNITS.LD4 or more likely SYPRSC.LD4. Do you have these in your ASP folder?
If not, you may be out of luck unless you have the original ACCPAC Plus Windowing System Manager and LanPak diskettes and a way to read them.
It's always a good idea to do a test restore (we call it a fire drill) somewhere along the way and make sure your backup actually will get you back up and running (disaster recovery).

If you cannot get ACCPAC Plus running, we could take a look but it will probably come down to what I mentioned above.
If you cannot afford to lose your ACCPAC Plus data, we can show you Softrak Systems' Adagio and get you up and running with Adagio pretty quickly. Adagio is a windows-based accounting software that has screens, reports and functionality very similar to ACCPAC Plus but with many improvements of course. It will convert your existing ACCPAC Plus data over, usually pretty easily. The ACCPAC Plus users we have converted are able to learn Adagio pretty quickly without that much training and a shallow learning curve.
You can go to our website http://www.mmanyc.com for our telephone number or email me at adagio-in-a-day@mmanyc.com

Thanks Ed and Howard. We are checking these areas now and will report back. Howard, we do have all our original disc and a means to read them...just hoping for an easier way to get back up :-)

When you say the Hard Drive shut down, do you mean it crashed?
If you still have access to it, try using DOS xcopy /H to copy the entire \ASP folder. Look for hidden files first and change the attribute to unhide them.

Another thing to contemplate, the hard drive could have crashed because the area that has the operating system or allocation tables on it had errors, but the actual data files might still be readable if you put it as a secondary drive on another machine.

To Howard, do I remember correctly that there are hidden files in locations other than the root directory of the install or the ASP folder?

Yes we have access and also have tape back up of the folders. When we look at the directories from the bad hard drive and the restored system drive the file and folder counts and size match on both. I looked at the ASP folder and we have stprsc but as a .SYS not an LD4 file. We are restoring the ASP directory from tape back up now and I will report abck on done and tested. Thanks again.

Yes - I meant .sys, it's syprsc.sys

Any luck? Were you able to get ACCPAC Plus running?

Hopefully you are back up and running. ACCPAC Plus has now not been upgraded for about 20 years and officially discontinued for 10. It is getting more and more difficult to keep DOS programs running. We have people to come to us constantly when their ACCPAC Plus has irreparably crashed that need to scramble to put in a new accounting system and keep their business running. With the threat of ransomware, it has become even more critical to not be running obsolete and unsupported operating systems.

We would love to give you a no cost, no obligation, no pressure, informational demo of Adagio at your convenience. Please contact us.

Hi all, finally up and running. It turned out to be a read write permissions issue that Steve figured out. Probably caused by a tape restore. Once corrected all is good. Howard, thank you for the offer however we are not in a position to entertain an upgrade at this time. I will keep your info and when we can look at it I will reach out to you.
